C H R O N I C L E - solo art exhibition by Sioux Tempestt

Museum of Perth, down Grand Lane, off the Murray Street Mall in the Perth CBD

This collection of photographic images by Perth Artist Sioux Tempestt celebrates the stunning heritage architecture of Perth. The works investigate the history of the city by examining the built environment and the changes in structure design over the years. Some dusty and neglected, others beautifully renovated, these jewels link us to past generations. Through these enduring walls and doors, we visualise yesteryear. The laughter of young children heard echoing through the wooden clad hallways. Emigrants working tirelessly seven days a week in the factories, the yards, the infrastructure and stores. The maids in the sculleries, red cheeked and sweaty, toiling away on a hot summers day.

Combining photography, digital manipulation and various printing techniques, Perth is de-constructed and reconfigured. The work is a re-imagining of Perth’s architectural heritage, giving pause to consider the transformation of the city.

This exhibition represents an important documentation of Perth enabling us to preserve, respect, honour and remember our heritage. Through these works Sioux hopes Perthites will build on these foundations and embrace our historical architecture. Both large scale original artworks and limited edition prints will be available.

Additionally a short documentary style, behind-the-scenes film will screen on rotation in the micro cinema. The film will delve into the thought process and inspiration behind Chronicle. Catch Sioux painting a heritage themed mural in Grand Lane on opening night. Artefacts which have inspired the artist will be on display.

Hear guest speaker Richard Offen, Executive Director of Heritage Perth, speak about "Perth at the Outbreak of War".

During the 20 years leading up to World War I, the first gold boom had transformed Perth from a sleepy country town, whose modest buildings were dominated by the relative grandeur of Government House and Perth Town Hall, into a thriving and busy city. With the boom came a rush of new buildings which gave Perth’s still un-metalled streets a new air of refined elegance. The War however changed all that. With 10% of the population, many of them tradesmen and labourers, away at the front, the burden of ‘keeping Perth going’ fell those left behind. Mining declined and building work in the city all but ceased. This exhibition presents a snapshot of Perth and the people who lived here in 1914.

Brought to you in partnership with the RSL WA. Curated by Richard Offen -

Since the 15th January 2001 volunteers worldwide have been working hard to create the largest encyclopedia known to man, and they continue to do it for free.  Even here in Perth there have been active volunteers ensuring that Perth and West Australian information is available.  Western Australian contributors to Wikipedia have been actively meeting as group since 2007 with thanks to Wikimedia Australia we will be celebrating Wikipedia's 15th anniversary at The Museum of Perth.

We will have on display some of the efforts taking place in WA to improve the content. Please come along and see what we have been doing, ask questions and talk to the contributors. Wikimedia Australia will be providing refreshments on the evening

The Museum of Perth will open its doors to the public for this year's Open House Perth. Come take a look into the newly established museum space and its upstairs research hub and office.

The Museum of Perth is located in the historical Smith’s Chambers building at 117 Barrack Street, Perth, which was built in 1896.

The building originally possessed a beautiful cape dutch gable on top of the facade. History tells us it was damaged and removed in the 1968 earthquake that struck regional WA.

The building has had some interesting tenants in its time, such as the City Toilet Club, Dease Studios and the League of WA Wheelmen. It was also used for Psychic readings and a gambling den!

Guided tours by the Chair of the Perth History Association, will be available on Saturday, 7 November in two 30min sessions at 11am and 1pm.

Opening times: Sat & Sun, 10am-3pm
