St Joseph’s College Swimming Carnival at the Crawley Baths in early 1961

Today we have one of Dale Neill’s (1961) magnificent coloured photographs of the St Joseph’s College Swimming Carnival at the Crawley Baths in early 1961. St Joseph's [SJC] operated in Subiaco from 1954-1964, becoming Marist Junior College [MJC] in 1965.

Michael Quigley (1961) has identified some of the boys in this shot (names below), but we’d love to know who the others are – please tag, comment, or email archives@newman.wa.edu.au.

Two thoughts:

- Were there jellyfish within the baths? and

- Note the sign saying "CITY OF PERTH: Diving from this tower strictly prohibited". That sounds almost irresistible. Do you know of anyone who climbed up and dived from it?

L-R: Unknown, unknown (hidden behind pole), unknown, Wayne Spencer (1962), Dennis Jones (blue track suit top), unknown (blue shorts), unknown (hidden behind bench).

Next is Brother Gordon Heinrich (Teacher, St Ildephonsus College [SIC], New Norcia, 1953-1955; Principal, SJC Subiaco 1960-1964; Principal, MJC Subiaco 1965-1966) on microphone, unknown (child in front), Brother Cletus Read (in hat - SIC Old Boy 1930; Teacher, SIC 1938-1943 and SJC 1954-1964; Founding Principal Marist Senior College, Churchlands, 1965-1969), Brother Harold (Teacher, SIC 1955; SJC 1956-?).

Boys on right all unknown.
